Lakshmi And Wealth

"Knower of all, giver of all boons, remover of all sorrows and obstacles, bestower of intelligence, success, worldly enjoyment and liberation, with the mantra always as your form, beloved Goddess Lakshmi, salutations to you."

You see, I love to study all aspects of yoga, particularly how the deities, like Lakshmi, Durga, Kali, Lord Shiva, and Shakti, show up in our lives.

So, a few years ago, I began doing diligent research on the subtle meaning and influence of Goddess Lakshmi, and how to invoke her presence to positively influence my life, especially my finances.

Goddess Lakshmi deity is mistakenly connected only with money.

She is, in fact, the Goddess that governs all forms of wealth, success, and prosperity.

She is also known as Dharidranashini, the destroyer of poverty.

She is seen as the universal Goddess or Mother, instilling purity, knowledge, and divinity.

16 Forms of Wealth Mother Lakshmi Bestows On Us:

fame, knowledge, courage and strength, victory, good children, valor, gold and gems, abundant grains, happiness, bliss, intelligence, beauty, higher thinking and meditations, ethics and morality, good health, and a long life.

Women worship Goddess Lakshmi as she is the daughter of the Earth. And, her entire image is dazzling, "shining like gems and precious stones."

"Maha Lakshmi loves to live in palaces."

The meaning here is that she resides in those who are big-hearted, hard-working, and have clean homes.

She does not associate herself with laziness.

The Iconography, Pictorial Illustration of Goddess Lakshmi

She is often shown in several colors:

  • when her skin is Gold, she is the universal Shakti

  • when her skin is white, she is Mother Earth

  • when her skin is pink, she is the Divine Mother, radiant like the Sun.

The Lotus Flower

Most often depicted seated on a Lotus Flower, Goddess Lakshmi is represented as spiritual power and divine purity.

The Lotus Flower is rooted in the mud [the world], but is uncontaminated by the mud [the world]. Sitting on top the Lotus Flower indicates transcendence of limitations of the world and floats freely in a sphere of purity.

In fact, without the muddy water, the Lotus Flower would never grow.

Golden Coins

There are many symbolic references to the Golden coins flowing from Goddess Laksmi's hands...

One is the constant flow of her grace and wealth.

Another, when the Lotus Flower of true knowledge and wisdom blossoms, wealth and noble qualities appear and Goddess Lakshmi's blessings are present.

Other Symbolisms

She is also shown holding a pitcher of nectar in one hand and a constant ringing bell in the other -- these proclaim her victory. She is the universe and ever victorious.

Two elephants are often shown spraying water upward through their trunks, symbolizing that water is the basis of all human life on Earth. Water also purifies.

An owl is also often depicted, symbolizing intelligence.

So, Mahalakshmi is the Goddess of...

  • wealth, prosperity, abundance, generosity

  • beauty, wisdom, fertility, auspiciousness

  • courage, valor, charm, grace, fortune, light

  • kindness, benevolent, gentle, loving, graceful

  • virtuous, compassionate, protects, pure

Goddess Lakshmi is the means to achieving objectives and prosperity.

How To Exert Your Financial Discipline

You may be employed and receive a salary with your taxes already taken out.

You may be self-employed and pay your taxes quarterly or annually.

Or you may be independently wealthy and don't have an income, per se.

Whatever your circumstance, you need to take steps in managing the money you have by creating a budget.

Your sole purpose of having a disciplined budget is to clearly earmark your money to distinct purposes. Discipline is the key word here. Once you've created your budget, stick to it! Exert your financial discipline.

Although creating and sticking to a budget seems obvious to most of us, few of us don't put it into practice. This is where most people get themselves into a little bit of a financial pickle.

And, Goddess Lakshmi doesn't look highly on the level of credit card debt, big loans, and bankruptcy in our society, today.

So, here are some guidelines, a personal financial model, if you will, on what Goddess Lakshmi does look highly upon...

...Please note that the percentages may vary a little depending on your income, but the principle of it is the same.

  1. create a savings account and put 10% of your income immediately into it

  2. self-employed? Create another account and put 30% into it

  3. Dakshina -- a regular spiritual practice of offering money to a charity without expectation of personal gain. Donate say, 5%

  4. Put 2% into an account toward the annual holidays

  5. Put 5% into an account for your well-earned vacation

  6. Goddess Lakshmi has Golden coins flowing out of her hands. Here, she is showing us that we must spend money to allow money to come into our lives. So, spend 3% of your income.

Again, the percentages may vary a little depending on your income, but the principle of it is the same -- exert your financial discipline and stick to your budget.

The Obvious Uncertainty Of The U.S. Dollar

Who's The Big Winner?

The US dollar has lost more than a quarter of its value compared to other major currencies like the euro.

Unless you travel out of the US, you don't notice it.

One of the best ways to improve your profits is to invest in foreign currency.

And, in an uncertain economy, like we're in now, it only makes sense to diversify your international currency holdings.

Getting Out Of The Matrix

In the US, your finances, spending habits, and wealth are under constant scrutiny.

When investing your money outside of the US, this information becomes virtually impossible to track.

Financial Terrorists

US financial markets were closed for several days after the September 11th attacks.

You were unable to buy or sell any of your US stocks, bonds or mutual funds.

The next attack could shut down the US market for weeks. The dollar will decline and you can't do anything about it.

The answer is, having your money and assets safely working for you, offshore.

You could continue trading and making money as these countries won't be affected by the attacks.

Banks Going Bankrupt

So-called financial experts say it's very risky "going offshore."

I say, what about Enron accounting scandals, and top US banks going under, all of which cost tens of thousands of investors and customers billions of dollars.
