Definitions Of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome

  • Also known as mandible pain dysfunction and temporomandibular myofascial pain syndrome

  • Unilateral or bilateral dull pain in or around the ear, temporomandibular joint, cranium or teeth

  • Chewing muscle tenderness

  • Clicking or popping noises in the TMJ when mandible is in motion

  • Limited range of motion

  • Commonly found in people of all ages, especially women.


Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction Syndrome

  • Myofascial trigger points radiating pain to the ear, head, teeth, temple or throat

  • TMJ disc is trapped causing a clicking or popping sound

  • Mandible deviates from its proper movement plane on opening or closing of the jaw

  • Loss or limited range of motion

  • Increase in pain levels as TMJ dysfunction gets worse

  • Difficulty in swallowing

  • Malocclusion may develop

  • Tinnitus or ringing in the ears

  • Ear pain as well as a sensation of pressure in the ear
