The Mind

The mind was made to think. When you try to subdue the mind, turn it off, it becomes restless. In Nidra meditation, you give the mind something great to focus on within yourself, not something external. You make it one-pointed.

Again, we use the two main principles to do this --

inner awareness and the breath.

Samskaras

Samskaras are recordings of your lifelong experiences stored in layers of your inner consciousness. There are also deeper Samskaras that can be latent and unconscious.

Sankalpa

How do we train the mind?

The most effective way is making a firm resolution called Sankalpa. It's a short mental statement that you impress on the subconscious mind when in an open and receptive state during Nidra Meditation. Like sowing a seed and watering it.

Here, we'll call them positive affirmations.

In Yoga, there are three main energy channels or Nadi's:

  • Ida -- mental energetic force

  • Pingala -- vital energetic force

  • Sushumna -- spiritual energetic force

Ida and Pingala Nadi's continually give the brain and mind stimuli so that it can function through the senses. During Yoga Nidra Mediation, the Sushumna Nadi is activated. This gives the brain a higher quality of stimuli.
